MEET SARA
Sara Agerton was born and raised in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania, where she was raised in a religious household by hard-working parents. Growing up, Sara’s parents would pack the family to visit church members and neighbors to ensure that they had all the help they needed during challenging times. This gave Sara the perspective that everyone, no matter who they are, where they live, what they believe, and regardless of their politics, will face unique challenges and may need help sometimes.

EDUCATION

Sara continued the path of service after graduating from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science Criminology degree with the intention of going into law enforcement but quickly determined that her desire to identify the root of the problem was more critical. It was only natural for her to dive into social work advocating for people who couldn't. So she went back to school while pregnant with her daughter to complete her master's in Social Work at Temple University and devoted a twenty-year career to identifying resources, fighting for services, and advocating for residents of all ages in central Pennsylvania.

HOME LIFE & VOLUNTEER WORK

A lifelong Pennsylvanian, she now lives in the Borough of Mechanicsburg with her husband of twenty years and their sixteen-year-old daughter. She has spent many years volunteering as a poll worker, Girls on the Run, Girl Scouts, and serving with the Sadler Health Center fundraising team, working to bring affordable and accessible healthcare to underserved communities on the West Shore.

WOMEN IN POLITICS

In 2016, after working at the poll station and seeing the results, it was extremely tough to explain to her daughter how those results could be possible. Looking for answers, Sara’s mother-in-law encouraged her to run for Mechanicsburg borough council, where no Democrats or women were currently serving. She was encouraged to run as a Republican to ensure victory, but Sara instead chose to stick to her values and run as a Democrat. She won by 16 votes.
